Project Updates

SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF NAVAJO JP8 PROJECT FOR LEC

Project Turnover of JP8 Unit Terry Pittman, Site Manager to Robert Torres, Navajo Refining Operations Supervisor

Lauren Engineers & Constructors completed the JP8 revamp project for Navajo Refining in Artesia, New Mexico in June. Numerous projects in the refinery were coming to completion at approximately the same time frame and Lauren completed the JP8 unit ahead of the Navajo Startup schedule. The project achieved a perfect safety record with no recordable or lost time injuries, no plant incidents and no accidents. The project peaked at 64 on-site personnel.
A big thanks goes out to the project team on-site and in Abilene for the “above and beyond” efforts to bring this project in safely and on schedule. Terry Pittman-Site Manager, Phil Gillam-Site Superintendent, Wayne (Buckwheat) Fields-Pipe Supervisor, Johnny Miles-Mechanical Supervisor, Monty Hambrick-Safety Supervisor, and all the project team performed in an outstanding manner. The fabrication shop, including Richard Bruton, Curtis McAllister and Carl Croft, did a great job in keeping the pipe spools on schedule with practically no errors. Kirk Boswell, Alan Hewitt and David Joiner were also instrumental in quickly working through potential delays and in performing final checkout and turn-over activities. Everyone who had a part on the project team did a great job of working together and staying focused on client satisfaction.

LAUREN E&C, ULC - ALBERTA, CANADA

Cogeneration Team members Brenda Murphy, Human Resources & Luc DeGrace, Site Services Coordinator.

Lauren’s E&C, ULC’s Alberta based Construction Management Team is now onsite in the oil sands of Northern Alberta and has successfully kick-started their effort on the Cogeneration Project.
Currently the team has over 20 Lauren employees onsite. This team is growing and getting better all the time. At this rate we fully anticipate being staffed-up by the end of September to our full requirements. Since its inception, the role of the Project Team has been to strategically coordinate efforts to manage the construction of the Cogeneration Plant required for a bitumen processing plant located in the oil sands north of Fort McMurray, Alberta.

The contractors we are working with are making a significant effort to bring us inline to where we need to be to meet contract dates. The site team intends to have 80% of the concrete in place by the end of October 2006. This will allow for the construction of required buildings to occur and for the instillation of available equipment. Much of this work will be done in cold weather conditions that are characteristic of this northern region during the winter months.

SAFETY

Through Week Ending September 22, 2006
Total Manhours = 1,075,836
Lost Time Incident Rate = 0.19
Total Incident Rate = 1.86

Join the Lauren Team! On October 6th & 7th
Lauren/Habitat Partner Project

Lauren Team. We have another great opportunity to serve our community by partnering with Habitat for Humanity in Abilene. For those of you who participated in the initial Lauren/Habitat partner project, you know that this is a great time to get to know your coworkers better and to help a family in need. This project presents a unique opportunity because we will be continuing the work from our first project at 1126 Burger St. This time, though, we will be doing mainly interior work (painting, installing cabinets, doors, baseboards, etc.) to get the house ready for the future owners to move in. As with the last project, we are going to have three work shifts – Friday, October 6, 12:30-4:30; Saturday, October 7, 8:30 – 12:30; and Saturday, 12:30-4:30. You are invited to sign up for any or all of the shifts. Meals and refreshments will be provided and you get a cool t-shirt, too. What more could you ask for? Free food and drinks, a free t-shirt, and, most importantly, knowing that you are helping someone who truly needs it. So, come be a part of the Lauren Team as we continue to strive to make a difference in our community by “serving to build a better tomorrow, today!”

Softball

Lauren began an annual slow-pitch softball tradition last year and has carried it on this year, assembling both men’s and co-ed softball teams. The men’s team (Lauren 1) consists of 12 Lauren Employees from the general office, Cypress office and the Fabrication shop. The Co-ed team (Lauren 2) has 11 players and consists of men and women from all of the Abilene offices, as well as a few family members. The softball season lasts 10 weeks, with the men’s team playing on Tuesday nights and the co-ed team playing on Wednesday nights. Game times are at 7:30, 8:30, or 9:30. The games are played at Nelson Park (next to the Zoo). Kevin Porter may be contacted regarding game times. Come support your Lauren team as they “steal” the show.

CLEVE'S MESSAGE

Last month Lauren Engineers & Constructors, Inc. management team met in Thurber Texas. This was a productive meeting and we came away committed to a thematic goal of “Developing and Implementing Structure and Processes to prepare for future growth”. This is to be the overriding goal for Lauren over the next six to twelve months. We broke this goal down further into five initiatives and listed actions and metrics for these initiatives. The five initiatives are (1) Finish implementing Dynamics (2) Define and develop high performance teams (3) Identify markets and strengthen Lauren within them (4) Define and develop processes and (5) Develop and integrate current and new personnel. We have already made excellent progress on the Dynamics Initiative. Jeff Hocke was appointed the Dynamics team leader and has proven himself to be a great leader. He has the Dynamics implementation process well organized and is effectively driving the overall Dynamics implementation. Functional Area Sub Teams (FAST) have been identified and are being led by the department managers most closely connected to each particular process and staffed with cross-functional team members from other departments. These FAST teams are finalizing process flows, identifying issues, developing training plans, etc. We appear to be well on our way to successfully completing the Dynamics implementation effort. My thanks to all for your hard work and patience throughout a very difficult and sometimes painful process.

Development of high performance teams must begin at the top. The Lauren Engineers & Constructors, Inc. executive management team has begun an intensive team building process. It became immediately evident that there is yet a higher team to be formed that includes Lauren Engineers & Constructors, Inc.’s sister companies to the North, Kamtech Services, Inc., and Lauren E&C, Inc. We will begin the process of defining and developing Lauren Holding’s first team during the month of October at our Fall Manager’s Retreat. It is my belief that the first two initiatives are of such urgency and importance that we will be unable to begin significant actions on the remaining three initiatives until after the October meeting.

The energy crisis facing the world offers Lauren almost limitless opportunities to “expand the place of our tent” (Isaiah 54:2-4). Developing and implementing structure and processes to prepare us for future growth must be our number one goal if we are to be prepared to receive these blessings and excel in the engineering and construction marketplace. I look forward to participating with you in growing our business with integrity and skill. Thank you for all that each of you has already done and for your continuing commitment to our future.
God Bless,

Cleve Whitener
