NSO Project Achieves One Million Safe Work Hours

On February 7, 2007 The Nevada Solar One Project achieved one million safe work hours without a serious injury or lost time incident. Achieving this milestone combined efforts across several disciplines, including civil, mechanical, piping, instrumentation and electrical. This achievement reflects the site management team's initiative to provide a well-planned, safe environment for the workforce. This safe environment was developed by a management philosophy which cares about the welfare of all. This philosophy involved not only employee safety orientation but site and task-specific safety training. Proper tools and personal protective equipment were supplied to the employees, and task reviews were conducted from the top supervisor to the lowest helper, applying their input to daily safety planning. This approach created a collaborative safety approach where each worker looked out for himself as well as his fellow worker.

Ron Johnson, Project Manager for the Nevada Solar One Project, commented, "By focusing on Behavior Based Safety we were able to create an injury free culture." This type of culture grew out of a safety commitment from both corporate and site management and extended to each craft worker, empowering them to control their personal safety. This culture, in turn, created a work environment and attitude which did not allow unsafe conditions or unsafe acts.

Congratulations are extended to the entire Project Team, especially Charlie Hay, Cody Bryant and Scott Hill in this major safety achievement.
